GTCOM, the world's leading big-data and artificial intelligence enterprise, held the "Hi Five" 2018 Brand Strategy Conference in Beijing on July 31, 2018. GTCOM CEO Eric Yu delivered a speech under the title "The Essence of a Dream" at the conference, in which he shared GTCOM's five-year development trajectory. Additionally, Mr. Yu released and demonstrated three landmark AI products. Like a technology dream show, the conference not only amazed the hundreds of journalists and guests present but also allowed the world to see China's strengths in big data and artificial intelligence through online video in real time.
The dream becomes a reality in five years
CEO Eric Yu, delivering a passionate opening speech, said, "In the past five years, GTCOM has constantly pursued its dream and explored new possibilities. On the road toward the realization of that dream, the challenges and occasional setbacks have served to encourage our growth. Only in this way can GTCOM continue to grow. On the way, we have turned the many beads of sweat into pearls."
GTCOM has, in fact, evolved ceaselessly throughout the past five years. Since its establishment in 2013, the company has successively launched a global multilingual call center, the YeeCloud online language-service platform, the multilingual machine-translation platform, and the YeeKit language technology tool platform. Thanks to the persistence in language technology, GTCOM has achieved the first place in 16 language pairs at the world's top IWSLT international competition. Moreover, GTCOM has enabled translations in 37 languages and approximately 1,332 language pairs. The machine-translation performance of more than ten language pairs such as Chinese-English, Chinese-Russian, Chinese-Spanish and Chinese-Portuguese has reached the world's leading level. Scenario-based applications of machine translation have been realized in vertical areas on a large scale.
As language technology is constantly improving, GTCOM has established in-depth layout in big-data and artificial intelligence industries and built the YeeSight big-data platform. It has launched the global big-data analysis platform, NexMagic intelligent semantic search engine and other products, but it has also released Insider Enterprise Big Data, JoveBird Financial Big Data, and other solutions for different vertical industries, serving the government, enterprises, news media, financial investment, industry and other global users.
The past five-year period has seen every solid but challenging step of GTCOM which has shifted its focus from language services to big-data analysis and AI applications. It is precisely because of unremitting persistence that GTCOM can start from scratch, achieve constant breakthroughs, and become a leader in the big-data and artificial intelligence industries.
The heart of Jove and "insight" into Musk
"Jove is the Latin name for Zeus, and we hope that JoveMind can open up an infinite imagination for users. Throughout the past few years, we have continuously accumulated and analyzed massive amounts of data and built splendid knowledge graphs to help our customers see everything in the market, as Zeus would." Mr. Yu spoke confidently as he introduced the first of several new product releases. As the JoveMind knowledge-graph building and analysis platform constantly integrates the global data in multiple realms, it extracts knowledge from the data in real time, builds large-scale enterprise knowledge graphs and provides decision-making support for enterprises along with risk warnings in regard to reputation, strategy and credit. Just as Eric Yu's positioning of JoveMind, "JoveMind is a knowledge-graph building and analysis platform for enterprise customers. It extracts relationships and entities from complex data for visualized display, and provides customized algorithms and analysis dimensions for customers in various industries and application scenarios."
Then, a sudden analysis of Elon Musk, known as the contemporary "Iron Man," brought the entire conference to the first climax. On the big screen, Eric Yu entered "Musk" in the system, and the huge screen immediately showed a detailed and meticulous analysis graph for Musk, where the dots represent physical things, including companies, people, location, and products which are distinguished by different colors; the lines represent their relationships, i.e. investment and financing relationships, colleague relationships, executive relationships, etc. All people, things, objects, and enterprises related to Mr. Musk are fully displayed by a huge multidimensional network association graph, and even the secret that Musk was hired as a consultant by Trump was displayed. A media guest said surprisingly, "If JoveMind gets popular, everyone will become a data expert, and the world will become more transparent and real."
"Einstein said that logic will take you from A to B, but imagination can take you anywhere," Mr. Yu said. "I believe that JoveMind can bring great power and capacity to your imagination."
Insight into the future with the "eye of Zeus"
The second product released was JoveEye, which, as its name suggests, is an artifact that can be as insightful as the eyes of Zeus. As Mr. Yu introduced the product, he said it builds technology knowledge graphs based on global patents, technological vocabularies, journal articles, dissertations, conference papers and information data. JoveEye's objective, he said, is to deliver comprehensive, multidimensional big-data analysis services for industry customers who focus on frontier technologies, such as technology R&D companies, universities, government agencies, scientific research institutions, investment institutions and intellectual property service organizations, so as to put the future of technology at users' fingertips.
"For example, if we want to know about the drone market, maybe we will choose an ordinary search engine, and then we only get the Internet information containing the keyword 'drone'. However, if we search with JoveEye, we get not only all the information including the keyword 'drone,' but we get almost all the information associated with the drone, such as flight-control methods, aircraft control system-related information, drone connecting parts, rotorcraft, propellers and other important information that doesn't contain the keyword drone but is closely related to drone technology and market information. After mastering such a huge amount of information, JoveEye will analyze both old and new news about the drone market and anticipate the market's possible future trends through analysis of the market and its hype cycle curve. Accordingly, it gives the merchant critical big-data analysis and trend-forecasting reports." Mr. Yu's description was accompanied by vivid on-screen graphics.
Thus Mr. Yu summed up the positioning of JoveEye: "JoveEye is the world's first cross-language intelligent semantic search and analysis technology big-data platform based on Al technologies such as deep neural network, knowledge graph and cross-language semantic analysis. Cross-language, cross-regional and trans-disciplinary data foundations will empower JoveEye to make the future of technology at your fingertips."
Machine translation, the competition between giants
"The third new product released today is MerCube. It's a type of enterprise-level machine-translation hardware, and I have awaited this moment for a long time. This name is a combination of Mercury and Cube, symbolizing imagination and possibility. To fully understand this product, let's review the past five years of GTCOM. Our long journey began in 2014. In June of that year we released the Chinese-English machine-translation engine, becoming the first company to develop a machine-translation engine in China, following Google, Microsoft and Baidu. In December 2014 the machine-translation engine supporting five languages was launched. In July 2015 the phrase-based SMT engine supporting 19 languages was launched. In December 2015 the phrase-based SMT engine supporting 37 languages was launched, and the number of supported languages was the highest in China at that time. In October 2016 the NMT Chinese-English machine-translation engine was launched, making GTCOM the earliest enterprise to provide NMT services in China. In December 2016 all 37 languages deployed online were updated to the NMT model. In December 2017, at IWSLT 2017--a world-renowned international machine-translation assessment competition--GTCOM won 16 first places among the total of 20 assessment categories, and undoubtedly ranked number one in terms of the comprehensive score. In May 2018, at WMT--a world-class assessment competition, GTCOM undoubtedly once again won first place in the English-to-Chinese pair. It is no easy to stick to this long journey, as we know that those who compete in the machine-translation field are giants. Currently, our MT engine supports 37 languages that are enough to cover 224 official languages of 233 countries and regions, and the support for official languages covers more than 90% of the world's population."
After Eric Yu proudly introduced GTCOM's remarkable performance in the field of translation, he talked about the strength of the parent company, "This year also marks the forty-fifth birthday of the China Translation Corporation, which was the first Chinese translation company established in 1973. With such a profound historical legacy, we have no reason not to match or surpass competitors such as Google and Microsoft. As we know, high-level and high-quality corpus accumulation is one of the important foundations for machine translation. We have more than 5 billion sentence pairs of parallel corpora registered and 10 billion monolingual corpora, which are increasing at a speed of 200 million sentence pairs of parallel corpora and 500 million monolingual corpora each year. For some special minor languages, the cost of a sentence pair of parallel corpora exceeds 1 yuan. Such a strong accumulation is incomparable to that of any of our competitors."
Mr. Yu selected a paragraph of medical text and tested the machine-translation results using Baidu, MerCube and Google. The results show that MerCube's performance is amazing, both in terms of quality and speed of translation.
Mr. Yu described MerCube as an all-in-one solution; as a magic box of artificial intelligence. GTCOM embeds machine translation, speech recognition, image recognition, video analysis and NLP algorithms in MerCube, which is also provided with huge knowledge graphs. Its mission is to solve the challenges of service efficiency, data security and model adaptability while satisfying the business needs of enterprises in an array of industries. It's a solution that can be commercialized for enterprises of every description.
At the end of his speech, Eric Yu reiterated his speech theme that the essence of dreams is to create infinite possibilities. In the past five years, GTCOM has always stayed true to its mission and has blazed a trail in the fields of big data and artificial intelligence, creating more beautiful possibilities for people's future.
